By Four States Case Files

A Duquesne-area store employee faces a felony stealing charge after police alleged he took a customer's lost wallet and cash, according to documents filed November 4 in Jasper County Circuit Court.

The complaint charges Dustin Michael Shaw with a class D felony involving property valued at least $750. It alleges the theft occurred October 15. The charge is an allegation, and Shaw is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

What the affidavit alleges;

In a probable-cause statement dated October 23, Duquesne Police Sgt. Brian Wenberg wrote that a customer left a wallet at Fastenal the previous day. An employee placed it in a cash drop box while waiting for the owner to return.

According to the affidavit, Shaw initially told the officer that another man had collected the wallet. Wenberg said nearby surveillance footage contradicted that account and that Shaw subsequently admitted taking it. Those statements are the officer's account; the underlying video was not independently reviewed for this article.

Wenberg reported recovering $725 and later another $150, as well as the discarded wallet. The customer's estimate of the original cash amount was $800 to $1,000; the affidavit's reported recoveries total $875.

Case status;

The reviewed complaint requests a summons. The charging documents do not establish a conviction or an arrest in this case.
